There is a moment in every fast that matters more than the clock, and it's common to stop before reaching it. The switch is not a modern trick. It is an evolutionary feature. Human metabolism is built to run on both sugar and fat, moving between them as food availability changes. The gaps between meals, and historically between successful hunts, are exactly what this system was designed for. How do you know when you have actually flipped the switch? The most reliable everyday signs are in how you feel. Early in a fast, hunger tends to arrive in waves; once you cross into fat-burning, that hunger usually flattens and becomes easier to ignore. Your energy steadies as well, as the jittery, foggy feeling of running low on sugar gives way to a more even state. These felt changes are a rough but genuine signal that your metabolism has shifted. Timing offers a rough map too. When your stored sugar is already low, the switch often begins somewhere past the twelve-hour mark. When you begin with full glycogen, it takes longer.
